In this clip my friend Chauncey is finishing his trombone solo and I was next up to play. Well, I wanted to have a different sound for contrast, and to hold the attention of the listeners so I picked up a plastic cup that someone in the audience set on the stage and used it as a plunger mute!
Recorded in 1989 at the BBC recording studios London England while on an overseas tour with the CBJE. There is some flutter and distortion from an old cassette dub that was given to me me upon our return to the States.
Here's my bone solo on Chuck Cuminale's song Rollin, & a Tumblin, recorded in London at the BBC studios (1989). This clip is from an old cassette dub, therefore, there is some distortion.
This was one of our outdoor concerts in Fayetteville, NY at Beard Park. This great Dee Barton chart written for the Stan Kenton Orchestra opens with the Bone Section playing the melody (the lead one part can be dangerous!) The band features several solos by Central New York's finest jazz musicians.
Chauncey Mays on Tuba and charts for the group. Conrad Zulauf on trombone, Tom Lund on set and Bob Davis sitting in with us On alto sax. Bob was with the Les Brown Big Band and with The Lawrence Welk Show for over 20 years.
Every Thursday night at Pierced Cider Works, 411 N 2nd St, Fort Pierce, FL .
Here is my attempt at measures 40-53 of this beautiful arrangement.
